Online Ad Sales Associate, Full time

Salary: Competitive; based on experience

Application deadline: Wednesday May 2nd, 2007

Start date: Mid to late May, or flexible

The Tyee is expanding its team.  Are you the newest member of BC’s best independent online news source?

Personality Traits and Interests:

You are interested in being part of the rapidly growing online journalism sector.  You are attracted to a stable sales position that allows you to play a key support role in the financial sustainability of a highly regarded three-year old independent online newspaper.

You believe advertising should support quality independent journalism in its important role in democratic society, not that journalism exists to create supportive environments for advertisers.

You have strong web knowledge, and a demonstrated track record of increasing ad sales.  You know the difference between a ‘visit’ and a ‘pageview’ and are interested in staying abreast of developments in the online advertising field.

You are a sociable and articulate communicator who enjoys helping potential advertisers meet their goals.

You are an organized and energetic multi-tasker that can function as a one-woman/man advertising department, handling sales, ad postings, invoicing, and accounts receivable.

You are persistent and persuasive when dealing with potential advertisers, but never pushy.

You have competent design skills that allow you to assess incoming ads for the necessary specs.  Though you will not be expected to design ads for clients, you feel comfortable discussing the basics with advertisers who are new to online advertising and need advice.

You enjoy a busy, stimulating, energetic, and flexible work environment.

You manage your time well, can prioritize tasks, and always respond promptly to emails.

Required responsibilities:

  • Sales to individual advertisers and ad agencies.
  • Post and manage all ads through our easy-to-manage ad server.
  • Manage and balance inventory.
  • Invoicing and accounts receivable.
  • Work with Business Director to incorporate sponsorships into ad inventory.
  • Optimize other affiliate advertising programs such as GoogleAdSense.

Qualifications, skills and abilities:

  • 2+ years of successful advertising sales.  Experience selling online is appreciated, but not essential.
  • University degree or college diploma
  • Strong web knowledge and computer literacy (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Competency with basic design skills and terms (Photoshop etc.)
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
  • Keen eye for detail, self-directed, organized.

This position reports to the Business Director, who is responsible for overall advertising strategy, business development, and reporting.

Compensation and hours:

This is a full-time one-year contract with a strong possibility of extension for the right person.  A base salary will be paid, plus as a commission on sales.

The Tyee is a flexible work environment that can accommodate family or other commitments.  You will be expected to maintain regular hours at our downtown Vancouver office, but some work from home is also fine.

Application information:

The Tyee is an equal opportunity employer, with the only restriction being that applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.  Applicants must also be willing to work mostly in the Tyee’s Vancouver office, so only applicants living in the Greater Vancouver area will be considered.

Please send resume, including at least two professional references, and a brief cover letter to Michelle Hoar at mhoar@thetyee.ca with subject line “Online Ad Sales job posting.”

Application deadline is Wednesday May 2nd, 2007.

Interviews will take place between Wednesday May 9th and Friday May 11th, and the position will start as early as possible.  Only applicants considered for interview will be contacted.

Salary is competitive, and based on experience.
