How to get Democracy to stop freezing while “loading channel guide”

I’ve been trying out Democracy, the open-source video player / search engine / BitTorrent client / coffee maker.

Or, rather, I’ve been trying to. But the damn thing kept hanging on start-up, with the message “Loading channel guide”.

There were plenty of other complaints about that problem, but no solutions. So I started digging around, and here’s how I was able to get it working: I quit Democracy*, deleted every file in the folder (my home folder) / Library / Application Support / Democracy / Database, and restarted Democracy.

Poof. Works perfectly. DP recreated the database files, and all seems well.

* That’s one ominous phrase, isn’t it?
