Vancouver alternative newsweekly Terminal City is suspending publication effective immediately publisher John Kay announced today. Kay said the October 27 edition, which hit the streets last Thursday, will “probably” be the paper’s final edition.
It’s hard to make a go of it in the indie media business, and apparently harder still to do it in Vancouver. TC is going out with a bang, including Nathan Allen’s highly partisan but passionate (and persuasive) call for Jim Green’s election as mayor. You can download the farewell edition in glorious PDF format.
Killed, no doubt, by the slicker, more accessible dailies. And, of course, society’s declining interest in newspapers.
It certainly wouldn’t have anything to do with the coup detat last year, or the poor management (how many editors did it have in the last year?), or the mediocre writing, would it? no…
or that horrendous logo? GOOD RIDDANCE.
Or that weird thing they did where the people who wrote the articles put their names at the top of them. “Bylines,” I think they called them. Anonymous sniping from the hills is just so much cooler.
2 of the 3 dailies are own by canwest. one in part by patteson. how the fuck would any of these province jr. dailies contribute to the demise of a “ALTERNATIVE” weekly. people pick up both publications for completely different reasons. use your head.
Anyone lamenting the loss of Terminal City is a complete lunatic. The free dailies have nothing to do with it going under. In it’s last year it was painful to read, and tried as hard as it possibly could to look exactly like the West Ender and the Straight. How do you expect to survive when you strive for mediocrity. Fuck those guys. Society may have a declining interest in newspapers, but no such decline exists as far as other published mediums are concerned – but that doesn’t even matter in this argument. Terminal City was thriving before all the worth while people (save Jenn Wong…not) left. It died cause it sucked. And if you’re sad it’s gone, you suck too. Sucker…
