…And the site is back up, now housed with our new hosts.

We did, in the end, choose Dreamhost. I was wary given the experience of one of our commenters (and he’s no slouch in the tech department), but in the end we were seduced by the large user community and the phenomenal 80-per-cent-off-your-first-year deal. Like Krusty, we too are only human, and if someone’s going to back a dump truck full of money up to our house, well…

The move went surprisingly smoothly, and this site was down for all of maybe an hour before bouncing back. (If anyone needs some tips on migrating a WordPress blog from one host to another, let me know.) I have a small, steep learning curve ahead of me in a few technologies I’ve been meaning to get around to learning — IMAP and WebDAV, f’rinstance — but with any luck any bumps I encounter will all be concealed beneath the seamless surface of this site’s gleaming exterior.

All of this is with a fond farewell to my erstwhile hosts at Ace of Space, whose willingness to stubbornly bang away at technical issues with speed and good grace was deeply appreciated.

Meanwhile — has anyone else noticed Technorati has done something dramatic to their rankings? Either the algorithm’s changed, or they’ve finally chased those wombats out of their nest in the middle of the server room… but my ranking has jumped from 36,000-some-odd to 22,817. They’ve discovered scores of new links to the site. The improvement has been even more drastic at Alex’s place, which is now in the 7,000s.
