This deserves a lot more attention. Daniel Regelbrugge, a contributor to Matthew Good’s Mblog, warns of the horrific conditions facing millions of Russian children:

Yesterday, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia, Rashid Nurgaliev stated that even the recent economic growth of the nation has not been able to assuage the hurt that is spreading like wild fire.

According to even the most conservative estimates, there are more than 700 thousand orphans in Russia. There are more than four million children and teens that are either completely addicted to, or are using narcotics. Two million adolescents are illiterate (but they’re not exactly running up to the statistics bureau to be registered), and there are at least 6 million underage Russian souls that are living in conditions that don’t come anywhere even close to that blessed, opulent state of existence known as “poverty”.
