Against my better judgement, in a moment of weakness, I voted at the so-called National Marriage Referendum site (run by “Defend Marriage Canada”, which under truth-in-packaging laws will soon be renamed “Restrict Marriage Canada”). They require e-mail confirmation, but they have a privacy policy: it promises that’s the only use they’ll make of your e-mail address. And that’s the only e-mail contact I’ve had with them.

So tonight, my e-mail inbox gives forth a message from, yes, Defend Marriage Canada, telling me — well, skip to the end of this post to read it. (At least you can infer — from the fact they sent this kind of message to someone who voted the way I did — that their balloting is in fact confidential, and they haven’t a clue where I stand. Which actually makes this kind of spam all the dumber, because they’re effectively activating some highly-motivated opponents.)

I assume they were holding onto my e-mail address to prevent me from voting more than once. So, two scenarios come to mind:

  1. It’s possible they sent this accidentally to the wrong list — although anyone with any sense would have stored the voters list in a way that would have made that impossible.
  2. Someone there made the decision that it’s the 11th hour; the vote could come any day; and by the time the news broke that they’d violated their own privacy policy to spam (if the vote counts at their site are any indication) over 100,000 people, it would be too late to matter.

I’m hoping option 1, incompetence, is the answer. Because the Defenders of Traditional Values(TM) really should know that one of the biggies is integrity.

Here’s the e-mail. (Humorous little footnote from the colonies: the e-mail header reveals that it was sent, not from Canada, but from their U.S.-based parent organization. Looks like the Focus on the Family model is getting some uptake.)

Urgent Alert!

Prime Minister Martin is looking to pass Bill C-38 next week,
Probably Monday or Tuesday!

This may be our last opportunity to influence a few MP’s to oppose C-38 on third reading.

Listed below are the names and contact information for those MPs who still need to hear from their constituents.

If one of these is your MP, please call or fax a message to them as soon as you can. Please let them know that you are relying on them to represent their constituency by opposing C-38.

You can call their offices at anytime and leave a message on their voice mail. Because time is short, calls would be the best, followed by faxes and then e-mails. Be sure to leave your mailing address so they know that you are a constituent.

The vote may come as early as Monday, so please contact them at once.

If one of these is not your MP, but you think that someone you know may live in their riding, PLEASE FORWARD THIS ON TO THEM AND ASK THEM TO CONTACT THEIR MP!

[A table of contact information appeared here for MPs Navdeep Bains, Colleen Beaumier, Don Bell, Raymond Chan, Joe Comuzzi, Ruby Dhalla, Wanye (sic) Easter, John Efford, Mark Eyking, Joe Fontana, Albina Guarnieri, Tony Ianno, Nancy Karetek-Lindell, Joe McGuire, Dan McTeague, Shawn Murphy, Anthony Rota, Lloyd St. Amand, Scott Simms, Joseph Volpe and Tom Wappel]

Final C-38 Rally Scheduled

What is almost certain to be the final rally in opposition to C-38 will be held on Monday morning at the Supreme Court, next to the House of Commons at 11am. Any pro-family supporters in the area who can come are being urged to attend as families, as neighbourhoods and as friends. Bring your own placards, which can be printed out at www.preservemarriage.ca, or make up your own. Some suggestions for wording are listed below.

  • I want a Mother And a Father
  • Same-sex Marriage violates children‚Äôs rights
  • Will Children be Harmed by C-38
  • We the people want to vote on C-38
  • C-38 = No Mom or no Dad
  • C-38 Violates UN‚Äôs Convention on the Rights Of the Child
  • One Man + One Woman Equals Marriage
  • We want a National Referendum on C-38

Please forward this on to others in your province!
