  • Lloyd Budd saved my blog.

Lloyd Budd fixes my blogHere at Northern Voice, the very generous Lloyd Budd just made a few quick changes that fixed tagging on this blog at long last. I owe him big-time.

    Thanks, amigo.

  • LOLmoose

In honour of this weekend’s Northern Voice conference, my first forays into a whole new world of art: the LOLmoose.
    I’ze a soshul netwurk!

    I can has unconfurinss?

(Okay, okay… I’m new at this thing, and I’m 44 years old. Cut me some slack…)

  • Talking about crisis communication at Northern Voice

I’ll be speaking about crisis communications and the social web on Saturday at Northern Voice, the kick-ass Vancouver-based blogging conference now in its fourth year:

Imagine a situation where all eyes are on you or your organization, and you need to communicate quickly, clearly and effectively… probably under severe stress, with a lot more noise than signal out there.

It’s called crisis communications. And whether it’s something as serious and far-reaching as a natural disaster, or as personal as the arrival of a newborn, you’ll want to be prepared.

Discover how organizations large and small use social media to keep the lines of communications open when it matters the most. Learn how to use blogs to correct misinformation and get your message out. And find out why you need to build relationships and networks now… before you need to use them.

Moderating the event is the one and only James Sherrett. Come on, come all – I’ve had a blast speaking at Northern Voice in the past… even when I had to loop in a fellow panelist by holding a cell phone up to the microphone.

We’re proud to sponsor NV again this year; the inaugural conference, back in 2005, helped to spur the birth of Social Signal.

If you’re interested in Web 2.0, blogging, podcasting, online video, virtual worlds, social networks, photo sharing and the like, you won’t want to miss it. And if you’re a beginner who wants to get your feet wet, then Friday’s Internet boot camp is an absolute must.

    See you there!

  • Bundle up, Vancouver!

CBC News graphic forecasting Vancouver's high tomorrow as -38 degrees Celsius

Okay, is it just me? Or is tomorrow’s high a little, ah, out of line for Vancouver… February or no February?

    At least it’ll be sunny.

(From the CBC News web site.)

  • Thank you, ladies and germs of the BC NDP

I hope you had a quarter of the fun I did last night.

I headlined the Friday social for the BC NDP convention, a karaoke pub night sponsored by the Young New Democrats. (Wisely, they asked me to do stand-up rather than singing.)

And even though it was my first time onstage in a year and a half, it went swimmingly. The best response of the evening came for a line that occurred to me only a few hours before I went on: “My kids are at that magic age where the right wing doesn’t give a damn about them: too big to be fetuses, too small to be young offenders.”

Thanks to organizers Erin Sikora and Sam Heppell – it was a great evening.

  • Creative cities, cultural cities

Karen Fung has shared a cool-looking Vancouver event with me, and I thought I’d shoot it out to you:

    Co-Creating the Creative City

    Presenter: Mark Kuznicki
    Friday November 2nd, 2007 4:00pm-7:00pm
Gallery Gachet, 88 E. Cordova, Vancouver BC

The creative economy and the cultural ecology of the city can be mutually supportive or at odds with one another. The creative city movement has so far failed to engage the passions, energy and values of creative people, or to unite them towards a common goal. Merging ideas from the creative city movement with emergent properties of “open creative communities”, Mark Kuznicki will explore how government and these diverse groups can engage each other towards a shared vision of an inclusive and sustainable 21st century creative city.

Presented by Gallery Gachet, DTES Community Arts Network, Stantec, CCTCA, and Fearless Media. Mark Kuznicki is a researcher, writer and strategy consultant working at the intersection of technology, culture and public policy. He has consulted to the Ontario Min. of Culture, the Dept. of Canadian Heritage, Toronto Artscape and the Ontario College of A&D.

  • Thanks, Sol at Kitsilano Optometry

I’m seeing straight again after Sol at the Kitsilano Optometry West 16th branch stayed late to fix my frames. Free of charge.

So not only do they have the funkiest frames and the most professional staff I’ve ever dealt with… they’re great, great people.

    Thanks, Sol.

  • Got craft: turning craft fairs on their head

I wish I could be there:

got craft is a fun and unique event that brings a modern twist to the conventional craft fair.   We were often disappointed with the standard fairs and decided to venture out and start our own!   Completely self-funded, got craft was started to fill the void of modern and eclectic summer fairs in the City of Vancouver.   What a better way to showcase local designers, enjoy some tasty eats, support the community and of course, buy some handmade goods!

    Saturday, July 21st , 2007
    2:00 pm – 8:00 pm
    Kitsilano Neighbourhood House
2325 W. 7 th Avenue (at Vine Street)
click here for information on how to get there

ChangeEverything.ca‘s Kate Dugas is one of the 20 local vendors (and there isn’t a toilet paper roll cozy to be found among the lot). Check out their wares – this promises to be a lot of fun.

  • Social Signal is hiring a web services consultant/Drupal trainee and web project manager

Yep… it’s that time again: a fabulous opportunity to work alongside my favourite people. (Caveat: you also have to work alongside me.)

    We’re hiring a web services consultant/Drupal trainee

You’ll have a hands-on role in developing and implementing online community projects for our diverse range of clients. We don’t need a programmer, but we do need someone who enjoys working with computers, is very web-savvy and can learn lightning fast. We’ll equip you with the tech skills you need for the job; you need to come equipped with your own communications savvy, political smarts, and love of new tech challenges. If you love the idea of launching a career in technology for social change, this is your chance. [Full posting here]

…and a Drupal web project manager:

We’re looking for a progressive, highly-organized individual who can grapple with the details without losing sight of the big picture – someone who understands technology and its power, but who always keeps our clients’ mission, goals and deadlines first and foremost. You’re a born multi-tasker who can set priorities, adapt to change and crunch budgets. You don’t need to be übergeeky, but we do need someone who enjoys working online and grasps new ideas quickly. You communicate efficiently and elegantly, with the political smarts to make sound decisions for public-facing clients. And you know how to manage both up and down in an organization to get the decisions, support, deliverables and results you need on time and under budget. [Full posting here]

    And who’s Social Signal?

Social Signal puts the web to work for social change, helping organizations turn online communities into a powerful force for progress. We have extensive experience in the non-profit, public and private sectors, and a large network of local, national and international colleagues and clients that you’ll be working with on a regular basis. We’ve built ground-breaking sites like ChangeEverything.ca and NetSquared.org that demonstrate the social and strategic value of online community. While you expand your professional network and skills, we also hope you’ll enjoy being part of our personal network of technology leaders and community advocates in Vancouver and abroad.

  • Vancity Bike Share launch: Wed. 27 June, 9 am in Granville Square

Here’s a fun idea from Vancity:

We are looking for participants to give bikes to. We are asking people to write 100 words or less on ChangeEverything.ca on why they’d want a bike. Then we will be setting the first flight of bikes free at the BEST pancake breakfast on Wednesday morning. The bikes will be free in the community for nine weeks, changing hands three times before finally being returned to Vancity. We will then in turn deliver the bikes to PEDAL where they will be retrofitted and donated to the people who most need them in our community.

It all happens Wednesday, June 27 at Granville Square (that huge terrace on the north side of Cordova and the east side of Howe). Things get underway at 9 a.m. – but if you show up a little early, you can catch the BEST pancake breakfast running from 7:30 am to 9.
